Pocatello man charged in connection with fatal hit-and-run

POCATELLO, Idaho – A Pocatello man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident in connection with a collision that killed a cyclist earlier this month.

Tyler D. Carter, 38, made his first appearance in court on Friday, the Idaho State Journal reported. He has not yet entered a plea to the felony charge, and online court records do not show if he has obtained an attorney.

Bannock County Prosecutor Steve Herzog said the investigation into the cyclist’s death is ongoing and additional charges may be filed in the future.

Investigators said Bobette “Bobbi” Wilhelm was cycling near Pocatello on March 13 when a motorist struck the bike, causing her to plummet down a ravine. Evidence suggests the 40-year-old Pocatello woman was alive for some time before she succumbed to her injuries. Her body was found by searchers a few days later.

Damaged pieces of a GMC pickup were found at the scene, which prosecutors say match Carter’s truck.

A felony charge of leaving the scene of an injury accident carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.
