Letter: Jeremy Affeldt should have been mentioned alongside Spokane’s greats

Affeldt is among the ‘greats’

Tyler Johnson belongs in the “Rarefied Air” company of Spokane high school athletes to achieve greatness in sports. (Writer Dave Nichols) listed other outstanding stars from Spokane that made a mark in their professions. Jeremy Affeldt from Northwest Christian High School was left off the list of local greats. He pitched in the major leagues for 14 years with 43 wins, 28 saves, and a career earned-run average of 3.97 for Kansas City, Colorado and San Francisco. But it was in the playoffs that he excelled. Affeldt was a three-time World Series champion. Jeremy had a 2-0 record with a 0.86 ERA in four postseasons. He won the 2014 World Series clinching Game 7. His earned-run average was a minuscule 0.77 in 12 World Series games with the Rockies and Giants. Jeremy was also a leader in the clubhouse and his community. His Generation Alive non-profit foundation has motivated young people to feed the hungry, aid orphans, and abolish child slavery. Affeldt has shown he belongs on the list of local sports royalty.
