Citizen Journal: Spokane Racquet Club ‘best in the West’
Thanks for the article about the Spokane Racquet Club (Voices, June 24). Mr. (John) Happy must be very modest. In the ’70s, Spokane Racquet Club produced the best junior tennis players in the Northwest.
His son Jeff Happy was one. The Simmons twins and Julie Herrington were others. We are talking No. 1 ranking in the Northwest. Better than anyone in Seattle, Portland or anywhere. All from that club.
Julie Herrington was in the top 10 in the world as an adult. My brother was ranked in the top 5 as a junior. I was pretty hot but not like those guys. Our parents would drive us back and forth from Idaho about every day for clinics and matches.
It was a wonderful family experience and memories I will always cherish. The golden age of tennis.
