County library summer reading challenge kicks off

The Spokane County Library District has kicked off its “Online Summer Reading Challenge: All Together Now” program that uses the Beanstack website and app.

People of all ages can do the reading challenge that continues through Aug. 31. To enter, go to www.scld.org/reading-challenge.

Families can sign up with one login and create a profile for each family member for tracking. Participants track their summer reading and earn badges for reading milestones and other activities.

Each badge provides an entry into the summer prize drawings, sponsored by the Library Foundation of Spokane County and other community partners.

Reading selections can include titles from SCLD’s digital collections of eBooks and audiobooks, as well as books found on the shelves. The catalog is available at catalog.scld.org/.

For kids, summer reading is an important activity that helps prevent learning loss, also called summer slide, when students don’t read over the summer and lose ground with the skills gained during the prior school year.

Everyone who reads at least 600 minutes over the summer will receive a Certificate of Achievement, and all readers will help SCLD reach its community reading goal of 500,000 minutes.

Summer Parkways returns to South HillSummer Parkways will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Manito and Comstock neighborhoods.

The 4-mile route will be open to pedestrians, cyclists, runners, skaters and other human-powered recreation – no cars or motors allowed. And there will be activities and booths at Manito and Comstock parks.

For more information visit: www.summerparkways.com.
