Airway Heights has new manager

Airway Heights has a new city manager at the helm. Albert Tripp, originally from Alabama, started his new job June 15. Tripp has worked for Airway Heights for four years, including as public works director. Previously he was a deputy sheriff for Lincoln County.

Richard Keene definitely knows his anemometer from his barometer. One measures wind, the other air pressure. Duane Becker knows weather sensors, too, but from his south-facing home, he can see distant storms approaching the region.

Book list undergoes selection process

Maybe you weren't aware that a Spokane schoolteacher cannot assign a book that isn't on the district's approved reading list. That list is long and ever-growing. For instance, seventh-grade language arts teachers recently asked the school board to approve the addition of "Tangerine," which has won a number of national award nominations for author Edward Bloor.

Chalk it up to art

Sara Van Camp won Best of Show at Saturday's 11th annual ChalkArtWalk in Hillyard, in which entrants create original art each year on sidewalks in the historic business district on Market Street. This year's theme was "Earth, Wind, Rain and Fire."

Cheney boasts homes fit for hobbits

CHENEY – If Frodo Baggins ever moved to Cheney, he'd be quite comfortable living at 601, 603 or 605 Clay Street just down the hill from Centennial Park. Frodo, the hobbit protagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," would recognize these unusual earth-shelter dome homes as very similar to the hobbit holes described in the story. So alike are they that students from nearby Eastern Washington University, who are the usual renters of the dwellings, refer to them as Cheney's Hobbit Houses.

Cheney mobile home park to close in July

CHENEY – Residents of Myers' Mobile Home Park have to be out by July 18, according to a court ruling handed down Friday. The city of Cheney released a statement regarding the park which is the home for about 44 residents, shortly before the regular meeting of the City Council on Tuesday night.

Children’s summer program launched

The Edgecliff Neighborhood Center's summer program for children, including free meals, began Tuesday. Breakfast and lunch are served Monday through Friday at the center, 6903 E. Fourth Ave. The program is for children younger than 18, excluding infants, who live in the neighborhood.

EV considers raising meal prices

As food and fuel prices continue to rise, East Valley has become the latest school district to consider raising its hot lunch prices, and is also looking for other ways to cut costs. Board members heard a brief presentation on several options Tuesday night, but took no action. The price proposal suggests raising high school lunch prices from $2.45 to $2.60; elementary breakfasts from $1.15 to $1.35, and elementary lunches from $1.95 to $2.10. Middle school breakfasts could go from $1.25 to $1.35 and middle school lunches, from $2.20 to $2.40.

Expect hot days mid-July to early August

Sea-surface temperature patterns have been changing over the last four to six weeks along the equatorial regions of the Pacific Ocean. During fall 2007 and winter 2007-08, global weather patterns were influenced by La Niña, the abnormal cooling of ocean waters in that region. La Niña was blamed, at least in part, for the record and near-record snows across much of the Inland Northwest last winter. Spokane International Airport came within about of inch of snow, 92.6 inches, from breaking the all-time record of 93.5 inches set in 1949-50.
