School reform hearings kick off

The Senate Education Committee will launch four days of hearings at 3 p.m. today on state schools Supt. Tom Luna's sweeping school-reform plan, which is contained in two giant bills, SB 1068 and SB 1069. Today's hearing will include Luna's presentation on the lengthy legislation. That'll be followed by presentations from an array of stakeholders, which could stretch into tomorrow; those are the Idaho School Boards Association, the Idaho Association of School Administrators, the Idaho Education Association, the Idaho PTA, and the Idaho Business Coalition for Excellence in Education. Following that testimony, the committee will hear public testimony; it's scheduled to stretch through the rest of the week, with the committee possibly voting on the legislation by the end of the day on Thursday.

The Senate Education Committee meets at 3 p.m. each day; Chairman John Goedde, R-Coeur d'Alene, said the hearings could stretch as late as 6 p.m. They're scheduled for the Capitol Auditorium, the capitol's largest hearing room, and can be watched live online here. Also today, parents and teachers are planning a rally on the Capitol steps at 5 p.m.
