Going Mobile

An action-packed start in 2024

We might be parked in Palm Springs for a healthy chunk of the snowbird season, but that doesn’t mean we’re just chilling by the pool. Early January ‘24 has been action-packed in the best kind of way. Here are some highlights:

Daily hikes: We never get tired of the trails near the RV park where we’re staying. The South Lykken is a steep grind up to jaw-dropping viewpoints and we’ve been timing ourselves to see how fast we can get to the high point. The bar was set at 48 minutes on the first go-around, but John’s the clear winner on a solo journey up with 36 minutes to the top. Bravo! We also got a close up view of a bunch of bighorn sheep on the North Lykken trail.

A friend visits: Our pal, Tahirih, stopped for a couple of days on her way back from San Diego to Phoenix and we had the best time. Leslie took her out to Indian Canyons, the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. It was Tahirih’s first experience with an oasis, the stand of palm trees that seem to spring out of nowhere in the desert. We hit it on a rainy morning, so the water was flowing, the birds singing sweetly and the scents of sage and creosote filling the air. In other words, a beautiful experience. Later, we headed to a wonderful dinner at Alice B, a lovely new restaurant from the superstar chef duo of Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken. From the cornmeal cheddar biscuits with cardamom honey to the last bite of tahini ice cream, it was incredible. And the dining room was packed on a weeknight, so make a reservation!

Film festival: Speaking of those successful chefs, Leslie  interviewed Susan recently about a new documentary that she and Mary Sue are featured in, a story that appeared on the Forbes website. For several years, Leslie has managed to score a media pass to write about the Palm Springs International Film Festival and this time around, she’s looking forward to writing about some of the movies that have a food twist. That includes “The Taste of Things” starring Juliette Binoche and “Common Ground”, a documentary on the importance of regenerative agriculture.

Heading north: Half of the team is flying back to home base today for winter ski season. For a few weeks, John will be skiing out of Bellingham, hitting the slopes in the North Cascades, Mt. Baker Ski Area and maybe even a trip to Whistler. British Columbia. This Going Mobile lifestyle has adventures to match each of our tastes.

It’s RV show season

If you’re interested in seeing what’s out there in the RV world, the National RV Show is this weekend at the Spokane Convention Center. And next weekend, the Inland Northwest RV Show is at Spokane County Fair and Expo Center.
