CDA to Erect 9/11 Memorial

Coeur d'Alene Fire Chief Ken Gabriel, left, holds a section of iron beam from the rubble of the World Trade Center and talks supporters and media Thursday about the proposed 9-11 Memorial Park to be built at the new Cherry Hill Community Park in Coeur d'Alene. The plan calls for a granite monument and adjacent playground area to honor the 9-11 victims and to pay tribute to emergency services personnel in Kootenai county. Construction of the playground portion could begin in the spring of 2006, said Coeur d'Alene Parks Director Doug Eastwood, right, and funds for the memorial structure still need to be raised. At right is landscape architect Fred Ogram. The piece of steel beam from the WTC will be incorporated into the granite memorial, said Gabriel, who added that the park will be the only one of its kind because it will incorporate a monument and a playground together.
