Huckleberries Online

Wild Card/Saturday — 9/1/07

I'm going to keep Sen. Larry Craig's resignation announcement at the top of today's main thread for much of the day. It's the news of the day. It's historic news. In my almost 40 years in the news biz, I haven't witnessed anything quite like this last week in Idaho, where he virtually unbeatable elected official has been transformed into an unelectable pariah. I admit I don't feel sorry for Craig. I believe that he was caught in activity in which he has engaged for a long time. However, I feel sorry for those who surrounded him and believed in him, like Sandy Patano and Idaho spokesman Sid Smith. Craig's poor judgment has turned their world's upside down, too. The state of Idaho also took a monster hit. Even in the minority, Craig was in a position to protect Idaho's interests. Now, we all turn to Mike Crapo, who has relatively little seniority, and Craig's successor who'll have none. Alas. However, Huckleberries Online is never about one thread. Craig will dominate the news for days still. But this is also the Labor Day weekend, which means you might have other things to discuss. So here's your Wild Card ...
