Postal Woes

“The Postal Service said a Spokane Valley post office is one of hundreds of branches it may close to save money. The Trentwood branch, at 14409 E. Trent Ave., is the only one in the Inland Northwest targeted for closure.” http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2009/aug/04/postal-officials-weigh-options/

When is the last time you visited a post office? Do you ever use the blue drop boxes?

I visit the post office every day here in Spirit Lake to check my PO Box. I thought at first it would be a hassle, but I like that my mail is locked up and safe and I actually like going to the post office because it’s somewhat of a social occasion. I always see people I know there and sometimes it’s the only time I see them.

The postal Service is in a death spiral. First, they subsidize advertising by reducing the postage way below the cost of delivering it. Secondly, by continuously raising first class postage, they are forcing people to find other means of delivery, such as on-line banking and other methods.

As long as they continue along this path, don’t look for their survival barring heavy federal subsidies. Parcel post has went the way of the dodo bird, because FedEx and others are more efficient and cheaper. Government has never been as efficient as private business that has to make a profit to survive. (excepting GM and Chrysler)

I can’t remember when I last went to the post office. Our rural delivery person will take change taped to an envelope if you don’t have the extra two cents. I don’t use the blue mailboxes. I just walk out the driveway and hand mail to our mailwoman.

I dropped a letter to my brother at Marine boot camp at the downtown CDA post office on Monday night. I was dismayed to see their indoor mail slot was only picked up once a day, at 5:30pm. The Hayden box has two pick-up times, and in Hanover, NH, a town of 10,000 people, there were several pick-up times. And these aren’t blue boxes, but actual post offices!

I do use the blue boxes at LEAST 5 days a week.

I use the Blue Boxes to pay my bills. There’s something about the sense of security when the bills are dropped inside the box. I don’t fully trust electronic-bill-pay…

I use a blue box about once or twice a year. Our 83704 post office is about as close as the nearest one, so it’s not a big thing.

We should have a contest for most creative use for a surplus box. Winner gets one of ‘em. (Can they sell them for more than the scrap value??)
