Fewer Xmas Parties In Hard Times

Item: Holiday parties getting smaller: Many companies downsize, cut out bash, bonuses/Tom Sowa, SR.

More Info: A national survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management, an industry group, found nearly half of the companies that responded planned to cut back on holiday celebrations in the workplace. The group had conducted a similar survey one year earlier and found just 40 percent of companies were cutting back.

Question: Does your office still conduct a Christmas party for employees? Is it something that you look forward to?

my wife’s company used to throw great parties that included fancy catering, open bars, live bands, and extravagant decorations. One year, for example, they had a red carpet and had hired actors to take pictures as if their employee were “stars” walking down the red carpet.

Of course, they were bought by a much larger behemoth (not saying who, but they manage over 1 Trillion, yes trillion, in assets) and the x-mas party is a thing of the past … now they have a small event for employees - spouses aren’t even invited anymore :(.

I don’t have an “office” party. But we do throw an annual Christmas bash. I find that few of my workmates get into the forced socialization of feeling compelled to go to the bosses party. I certainly hated it when I felt obligated.

    Much fewer parties this year.

Here, at my office, the party never stops.
Why cut back? It’s something I look forward to each year.
First the owner toasts the employee and then the employee toasts the bookkeeper. And then there’s a big speech about how next year will be even better, even brighter.
And since I am all of the above, I never have to worry about embarrassing make-out sessions.
Although this year I am inviting my cat….
