UI officials have received complaints from across campus and throughout the state about racial epithets uttered by some Vandal fans during the game. Offensive terms for Hispanics and illegal immigrants reportedly were shouted at one or more opposing players, including the term “dirty Sanchez,” which apparently was directed at BSU forward Mark Sanchez. Some might not find the term offensive or understand its meaning. That doesn’t matter to Sanchez, to the other people of Hispanic heritage in the stands or watching on television, or to the hundreds of parents whose children asked them what it meant when the game was over/Doug Bauer, Moscow-Pullman Daily News. More here.
Question: Is there something other fans or UI officials could have done to stop the inappropriate behavior at the UI/Boise State basketball game?

This is really, really being blown out of all proportion. A few drunken spectators “embarrassed the state?” Come on, give me a break! You want to tell me worse things don’t happen when the UW and WSU meet up?

That’s odd? I thought Hannity said that since Obama has been elected there is no such thing as racism in America anymore. Strange.

And… for the umpteenth time: Dirty Sanchez is no more a racial epithetic than is the term “rim job.”

Moscow Minidoka; your version sounds square w/me. But it seems as though the newspaper in your town is stating a broader problem. Dunno what to make of it. But university oafishuls shoulda been all over the handful of miscreants shouting out the names. After all, if the players and TV audience could hear the taunts, you’d think someone in a position of responsibility could, too. ‘Tis a shame, given the big win for the Vandals that night. Always seems as though there’s an out-of-control screwball or two trying to cause problems for others.

BTW, MM; did our circulation manager get ahold of you Tuesday?

I agree with Dave. Just because its one or two doesn’t make it kosher and someone there should have taken charge lest the University be tainted by the shame of it.

DFO - Yes, thank you!

Yes, they could have ejected the twits who seemed to think that racial epithets are good sportsmanship.

I thought a “Dirty Sanchez” was a tequila martini with extra olive juice. If not, it should be. Parents need to learn how to think on their feet in these types of situations.
MM - tip your carrier once in a while and he/she will probably slide the paper under your front door for you (god knows it’s thin enough these days to fit – ouch).

Wow the media is still talking about this?
Personally, as I said before, it is totally blown out of proportion. Dirty Sanchez is not a racist term, just google or go to urban dictionary. I don’t know if there were any other terms said at the game. It sounds like it was a few people acting stupid.
I’ve heard worst things in other stadiums. It doesn’t excuse the behavior. If things get out of hand, security needs to do their job. I’ve expressed my opinion to both the UI President and AD.
I was at the Nevada game and nothing like this happened. The fans were really into the game and everyone was having a good time. This is not a university wide problem. There’s a few bad apples in EVERY fan base.
