Copeland: I’ll Have Time To Serve

In the comments section Monday, Phaedrus made reference to a Facebook comment by Coeur d'Alene council candidate Amber Copeland. It said that she was having a hard time keeping up with work and her family. Phaedrus wondered how she could handle a job, a City Council position and her family. Copeland responded to a query about this situation by HucksOnline:

My job has been aware of my city council aspirations for some time now and they support this endeavor. I work for a great company and it is their flexibility that has allowed to me to participate in the forum, different interviews, and future commitments I've made for my campaign. What Phaedrus fails to see in the post because it isn't spelled out is that the reason my work schedule is sometimes conflicting with my family time is due to the fact that my kids have their own schedules. As far as school is concerned, I took four time consuming and more difficult classes this quarter so that when January comes around (which as I understand it is when new city councilmen begin to serve), my plate won't be quite so full. It is also of note that my classes are online. In my opinion, the ability to balance life's responsibilities and practice good time management is a great quality for a city council member to possess. So to answer your question, yes I will definitely have time to be on the city council if elected.

Thoughts?

Phaedrus comment that prompted Copeland's response:

I'm not commenting on whether Amber's presence in the race helps another candidate, or not, but, as I have said from the very beginning, I am concerned about candidates like Amber and Kunka who show up every two to four years to run for office but disappear from public involvement in between elections. If a candidate is too busy with work, family and / or school then I have serious doubts about their ability to commit the time necessary for Council, or mayor. It is more than just Tuesday nights, much, much more. When a candidate posts this on their public Facebook page, I have to question whether or not an additional time commitment is a good idea, as well as their judgment:

"I am beginning to wonder how much more of this schedule I can handle. While I love my job, if it means I only get to see my kids awake one and a half days a week and I've had to resort to snapchat as the only viable means of communication with my older daughters, it's not really worth the sacrifice."--Amber Copeland
