In an online article for the Inlander, Quinn Western provides the back story for Kim Vezina, the 27YO woman found dead, floating in Lake Coeur d'Alene Nov. 9. Her sister, Jennifer Goe, of Moses Lake, said she doesn't know the Kim Vezina who had drug & alcohol problems. She describes her sister before she went astray.

Idaho reps back refugee vetting 

Idaho Reps. Mike Simpson and Raúl Labrador voted in favor of the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act — or the American SAFE Act — during a vote on Thursday. The bill requires refugees from Syria and Iraq to undergo extra certifications and background investigations before being admitted to the United States.

Scott gets 'Neighbors' event invite 25 

The Spokane Interfaith Council has invited Idaho Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, to a “Meet the Neighbors” event at the Spokane Islamic Center in January, in response to her legislative newsletter calling for a special session of the Idaho Legislature on refugee issues and declaring that Muslim refugees constitute an “invasion of our country.”

Poll: Idaho likes Ben Carson 

In a new poll of favorable/unfavorable ratings for presidential candidates and Idaho's top officeholders shows Ben Carson has the highest favorables. Republican Carson is the only candidate over the 50% mark. The poll was conducted by Zions Bank-backed Idaho Politics Weekly news site.

Hayden unveils new public art, 'Epiphany' 

With joyful cheers and the snip of a red ribbon, citizens of Hayden welcomed the newest piece of public art to their community Friday evening. More than 60 people gathered at the Hayden Library for the dedication ceremony of "Epiphany," a sculpture that represents a human head and the manifestations of the mind.

Chief Morris Antelope statue set up 

Last week, work crews set up a statue of Chief Morris Antelope, along the Spokane River, near the northwest corner of NIC. Local artist Cheryl Metcalf sculpted the statue, , which was selected by public acclaim in Coeur d'Alene and on the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation. Walkabout snapped this photo while workers were erecting it.

Most say Obama lacks ISIS strategy 28 

More than 6 in 10 Americans believe President Obama lacks a coherent strategy for combating the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to a new poll. Approximately 66 percent think Obama has no clear plan for defeating the terrorist organization, according to the CBS News poll.

Winter storm watch tonight 

A winter storm watch is in effect for much of the Inland Northwest from a storm system expected to arrive about 9 to 10 p.m. on Monday. National Weather Service forecasters said the storm should combine snow and rain, and exact snowfall amounts are not precisely known in advance.

A majority of Hucks Nation says that utility crews fixing downed power lines in the aftermath of Wind Storm 2015 deserve an A grade for their efforts. 119 of 226 respondents (52.65%) said the response by utilities to Wind Storm 2015 warranted an A. Refugee issue draws dueling rallies 38 

Protesters supporting refugees from Syria and other war-torn parts of the world filled the steps of the Idaho Statehouse on Saturday to call for acceptance and compassion, while counterprotesters across the street packed the lawn in front of the statue of former Gov. Frank Steunenberg to call for more stringent screening requirements.

Scott requests special session on refugees 61 

North Idaho Rep. Heather Scott is calling for a special session of the Legislature to “draft emergency legislation to address the refugee crisis” and declaring that Muslim refugees constitute an “invasion of our country.” In a legislative newsletter, Scott also said Muslim refugees will press “the Islamic agenda of domination and takeover.”

Syrian refugee program to continue 21 

The U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program will continue its plans to resettle Syrians in Idaho regardless of the concerns expressed by more than two dozen governors this week. Governor Butch Otter was among the governors who asked President Barack Obama to suspend the program until the vetting process is fully reviewed.

Volunteers wave goodby to a private plane carrying rescue dogs at the Van Nuys Airport in the Van Nuys section of Los Angeles on Friday. More than 800 cats and dogs from California animal shelters took off for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Illinois and Wisconsin in the largest Holiday Pet Airlift the Wings of Rescue has ever undertaken.
