McMorris Rodgers turns down debates
For the first time in decades, there will be no debate or face-to-face forum for Eastern Washington’s 5th Congressional District race because the incumbent is refusing to participate. U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ campaign said Wednesday she will not be able to debate Democratic challenger Daryl Romeyn “due to scheduling constraints.”

Editorial: McMorris Rodgers capable of tough job
U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers would like a fourth term in Congress, and Democrats in the 5th District aren’t putting up much resistance. They threw their support behind little-known candidate Clyde Cordero in the primary, but he was defeated by Daryl Romeyn, who is best known for forecasting the weather on local TV stations. He gave up that profession a while back and is now a full-time organic farmer. However, when it comes to the important issues in this race, he is partly cloudy. Romeyn is sincere in his quest to join Congress, but too often his response to questions is: “Again, I don’t have specifics.” Romeyn lobs the tired “career politician” label at McMorris Rodgers but says the district’s best-ever representative was Tom Foley – and we don’t disagree – but Foley was as entrenched as it gets. Romeyn correctly notes that a representative’s task is to listen, learn and legislate, but it is a candidate’s task to get past the first step in formulating his own ideas. We’re not sure who he was listening to in making trail breaks in national forests a centerpiece of his campaign.
McMorris Rodgers backs GOP ‘Pledge to America’
U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers was among congressional Republicans making a “pledge” Thursday to change the way the federal government works if they regain control. But her campaign opponent, Daryl Romeyn, said she and other Republicans should skip the grandiose statements and take some responsibility for things they did when they were in charge.
Election results offer up valuable lessons
Thousands of votes are still to be counted from Tuesday’s primary, but along with most races, some lessons are clear.
Election roundup: Murray, Rossi tie on the gloves
Sen. Patty Murray will face Dino Rossi in the November general election, continuing the fight for a U.S. Senate seat that started even before the Republican former legislator got into the race in May. With hundreds of thousands of ballots still to count, Murray was pulling down the most votes Tuesday night in the state’s top-two primary, and Rossi was a somewhat distant second, but far ahead of tea party favorite Clint Didier, a former NFL player turned Eltopia farmer. Bellingham businessman Paul Akers ran a distant fourth.
