    Athletes hit solid marks at Vandal Indoor

    Former Idaho Vandal Angela Whyte turned in the No. 4 time in the world this year in winning the women’s 60-meter hurdles in 8.02 seconds at the Vandal Indoor track and field meet at Moscow, Idaho, on Friday night. Idaho junior Liga Velvere broke the school record in the women’s 800 with a winning time of 2:07.63.

    Iowa State hires ex-WSU offensive coordinator Sturdy

    College football: Former Washington State offensive coordinator Todd Sturdy is the new wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Iowa State. Sturdy, a native of Tipton, Iowa, previously spent 12 seasons as the head coach at St. Ambrose University in Davenport. He was the offensive coordinator at Eastern Washington in 2007 before spending the past four seasons with the Cougars.

    AFL to use six officials this year

    The Arena Football League will move to a six-man officiating crew during the 2012 season it announced Monday. The league will utilize one referee, an umpire, line judge, side judge and two back judges. The AFL will still use regional officiating crews.

    Shock commit to re-energizing franchise

    Spokane Shock majority owner Brady Nelson is fully aware what is at stake as the franchise’s seventh season approaches. Spokane has won since its inception in 2006. The Shock have accumulated three arena football championships, four division titles and five conference crowns. They’ve made the playoffs every season.

    Shock sign linebacker/defensive end Yenga

    Former Southern Methodist star Youri Yenga signed with the Spokane Shock on Tuesday. Yenga, a defensive end and linebacker, was a two-time All-Conference USA selection. During his four-year career, Yenga had 139 tackles, 13 sacks and forced seven fumbles. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent in 2011.

    Cross country: The latest honor is in for Katie Knight. The North Central distance running standout has been named 2011-12 Gatorade Washington Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

    Shock hosting tryouts

    The Spokane Shock will hold the first of three tryout camps Saturday at the Shock Center (3212 N. Eden Road, Suite B, Spokane). Registration begins at 9 a.m. Players should wear workout gear and bring appropriate shoes for artificial turf.     Spokane Shock team president Adam Nebeker is stepping down to become executive director of Cancer Patient Care. Nebeker is one of three original owners who helped bring arena football to Spokane in 2006. He will remain one of five in the current ownership group, but he won’t be involved in the team’s day-to-day business with his new job.

    Just got off the phone with Shock team president Adam Nebeker, who is stepping down to become executive director of Cancer Patient Care. Nebeker is one of three members of the original ownership group that brought arena football to Spokane in 2006. He will remain one of the five in the current ownership group (which includes the original three by the way),but he obviously won't be involved in the team's day-to-day business with his new job.     G-Prep, Mt. Spokane win district soccer titles

    Gonzaga Prep and Mt. Spokane won district girls soccer titles Wednesday during a marathon night at Albi Stadium. Giulia Oliva headed in a rebound at 78 minutes as Gonzaga Prep (14-2) defeated Greater Spokane League champion Central Valley 2-1 in the District 8 4A title match. Savannah Hoekstra’s goal at 68 minutes allowed the Bears (12-3) to tie the match. G-Prep advances as the No. 1 seed to regionals. CV plays Mead at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Albi for the second and third seeds.

    Mead completes perfect GSL volleyball season

    Mead wrapped up the Greater Spokane League volleyball title with a perfect record by sweeping third-place Gonzaga Prep on Thursday at G-Prep. Paige Montgomery had nine kills and three blocks, and Jonni Dorr added 16 assists and six aces for the Panthers (9-0), who have the top seed to the District 8 4A tournament and will host No. 4 Lewis and Clark on Tuesday. G-Prep (6-3) will host No. 3 Central Valley on Wednesday.

    Shock bolster defensive line

    The Spokane Shock beefed up their defensive line, announcing the addition of AFL veteran Anthony Hoke, 2010 Shockie Ayanga Okpokuwurk and ex-Virginia Tech Hokie Steven Friday. Hoke had 15 sacks for AFL Cleveland the last two seasons. Between the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Hoke was with CFL B.C., but was released in April. Okpokuwurk had eight tackles and one sack in sixgames with the Shock last season. ...

    Meyer re-signs with Spokane

    Erik Meyer, who took over as Spokane’s starting quarterback after being acquired in a trade last season, has signed with the Shock, the Arena Football League team announced. Meyer was highly productive in five games, completing 75 percent of his passes with 22 touchdowns and three interceptions. Spokane scored on 34 of Meyer’s 39 drives, but the former Eastern Washington University standout wasn’t able to stay healthy, missing portions of games with cramps, a concussion and finally a season-ending shoulder injury. “There is no question that this is a QB-driven league and Erik is one of the best in the game,” Shock coach Andy Olson said. ...

    Geathers returns to Shock

    Jeremy Geathers, a defensive end who played a key role in Spokane's 2010 AFL championship run, has signed with the Shock. Geathers was the defensive player of the game after registering two sacks in Spokane's 69-57 win over Tampa Bay in the ArenaBowl. He went on to play for CFL B.C., but was injured early in the 2010 season. Spokane attempted to sign Geathers last season after trading DE Khreem Smith to Utah, but Geathers opted to join AFL Chicago, where he had one sack in five games. Spokane also signed OL Sifa Etu, who is a former teammate of Shock WR Brandon Thompkins at Arkansas State. More here.

    Brigitte Lowe and Eileen Chatfield combined for 22 kills and Community Colleges of Spokane hit .429 during a sweep of Walla Walla in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges volleyball play at Spokane Falls CC on Wednesday evening. Joni Nagy added 24 assists and 12 digs for the Sasquatch (21-4, 6-1), who began the day tied for first place in the East Division with Walla Walla (19-6, 5-2) and Blue Mountain.
