  • Utah Blaze hire Keefe as defensive coordinator

    AFL: Former Spokane head coach Rob Keefe (pictured above) is the new defensive coordinator for the Utah Blaze, one of the Shock’s West Division rivals. Keefe, 31, was fired as Orlando’s offensive coordinator after four games this season. Keefe, along with current Blaze offensive coordinator Matt Sauk, helped Spokane win an ArenaBowl title in 2010 but Keefe was fired after a 9-10 campaign in 2011.

    Community Colleges of Spokane’s track and field teams dominated the NWAACC Championships, which concluded Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College. The Sasquatch women won their ninth consecutive title, while the men won their eighth straight. CCS’ Jason Cash was voted Men’s Coach of the Year.

    Mead product Nate Blackham’s two-run single in the eighth inning proved the difference as Washington State beat USC 3-1 in Pac-12 baseball action Tuesday in Pullman. Jason Monda also had an RBI double for the Cougars (25-24, 10-14 Pac-12), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

    Shock pull out overtime victory

    It wasn't exactly how you draw it up. Spokane survived a sloppy, penalty- and turnover-filled game to pull out a 68-62 win over New Orleans on Friday night. Some of the uneven play was to be expected with Spokane working in seven new starters and losing standout receiver Brandon Thompkins to injury for most of the game. Some miscues simply couldn't be explained, such as a New Orleans' receiver getting behind three defensive backs for a 28-yard touchdown catch on the final play of the first half and Spokane messing up a potential game-winning PAT. The Shock won it overtime when Terrance Sanders made his second interception of the game, to go along with two kick returns for TDs. ...

Sanders picked off two passes – one in overtime – and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, helping Spokane escape with a 68-62 Arena Football League victory over New Orleans in front of an announced crowd of 8,918 Friday at the Arena.

    It's been a while since Spokane played an AFL home game. It was April 14 when the Shock thrashed Milwaukee.
