Shock will host title game after hanging on to beat Iron

Sometimes the difference in an Arena Football League game is minuscule. Good thing the Spokane Shock had a safety net to work with from midway through the first quarter. The Shock benefited from an early safety, built a 19-point lead and held on for a 60-57 victory over the Milwaukee Iron to claim the National Conference championship in front of 8,151 Thursday at the Arena. The victory puts the top-ranked Shock (15-3) into the ArenaBowl next Friday at 5 in Spokane. The Shock will host the winner of Saturday’s Tampa Bay-Orlando game.

Shock and Iron tangle again, this time in playoff match

By record, ranking, seeding, performance and just about any other measure, they are the two best teams in the National Conference, if not the entire Arena Football League. Fittingly, the Spokane Shock (14-3) and Milwaukee Iron (12-5) collide tonight at the Arena to determine the National Conference representative in the ArenaBowl. Orlando (9-8) visits Tampa Bay (12-5) on Saturday in the American Conference title game.

Shock use unique team model

Nobody on the Spokane Shock coaching staff is getting wealthy. Rob Keefe is believed to be the Arena Football League’s lowest paid head coach, probably by a sizable amount. There’s a good reason. He wanted it that way.

Another nail-biter, another Shock win

The Spokane Shock appeared to be in control midway through the fourth quarter, but that just wouldn’t be their style against the Arizona Rattlers. The teams played two hotly contested Arena Football League regular-season games, and their first-round playoff contest Friday turned into a nail-biter after a Shock trick play backfired with just over 4 minutes remaining.

Playoff ratchets up intensity for Shock, Rattlers

Two regular-season meetings between Spokane and Arizona resulted in a pair of Shock wins and a number of indelible images. Quorey Payne’s controversial touchdown reception off the dasherboards. Rod Windsor fumbling as he tried to stretch toward the goal line. Ben McCombs limping off the field with a knee injury. William Mulder intercepting Nick Davila’s pass on the game’s final play. And, of course, Rattlers coach Kevin Guy screaming at Shock counterpart Rob Keefe shortly after Spokane’s 63-56 win in Phoenix.

Shock hater finds Shock love

Jerry Turner has worn a lot of different uniforms in his football career, but he never dreamed he’d don Spokane Shock blue and orange. His goal at a couple of his arenafootball2 stops was always to knock off Spokane. He succeeded on occasion, but it was a missed opportunity that, ironically, is one of the main reasons he now plays for the Shock.

Vijil, McCombs will sit out Friday

The Spokane Shock will open the playoffs the same way they finished the regular season – without wide receiver Raul Vijil and defensive end Ben McCombs. Vijil, who missed the last five games with a knee injury, and McCombs, sidelined the last four games with a knee injury, won’t play against Arizona on Friday, head coach Rob Keefe said.

Shock have lot to gain

It could be an Arena Bowl preview. If so, the Spokane Shock want to accumulate every edge possible along the way. Top-ranked Spokane (13-2) closes the regular season at No. 3 Jacksonville (11-4) tonight. Spokane has earned home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Jacksonville needs a victory to ensure hosting rights in the first two rounds. A loss could drop the Sharks to the third seed in the American Conference and potentially two road playoff games.

Spokane Shock could relax, but no one seems willing

The Spokane Shock’s winning ways have brought a long-standing debate to the forefront: Rest vs. rust, momentum vs. health. Spokane has clinched home-field advantage throughout the Arena Football League playoffs. The top-ranked Shock own an 11-game winning streak and they’re primed for the postseason, but they still have one regular-season game remaining – at Jacksonville on Friday.

Shock’s surge rattles Rush

Spokane quarterback Kyle Rowley has played arena football for a long time and he’s learned to soak in the special times when they surface. Friday’s game was one of those times.

Win means Shock host playoff games

The Spokane Shock would like to make playing at home and playing on national television a regular occurrence over the next month. The top-ranked Shock (12-2) put their 10-game winning streak on the line against No. 6 Chicago (10-5) at 5 p.m. at the Arena. Spokane made its NFL Network debut last week against Iowa. Tonight’s game and next week’s regular-season finale at Jacksonville will be televised on NFL Network.

McMackin reunion foiled by an injury

The McMackin family reunion will go on, just not quite as planned. Back in March, they thought it would happen in Chicago, where Rob McMackin and younger brother Shawn, were offensive linemen for the Rush. But five days before the Arena Football League season opener, Spokane needed an offensive lineman and Chicago needed a defensive back so the Shock acquired Rob in exchange for Chris Martin.

McMackins miss reunion

The McMackin family reunion will go on, just not quite as planned. Back in March, they thought it would happen in Chicago, where Rob McMackin and younger brother Shawn, were offensive linemen for the Rush. But five days before the Arena Football League season opener, Spokane needed an offensive lineman and Chicago needed a defensive back so the Shock acquired Rob in exchange for Chris Martin. The trade foiled the brothers’ hopes of being on the same team, and possibly starting side-by-side, for the first time.

Shock set for Iowa team in need of big win

There are a number of factors that seemingly make the Spokane Shock’s chore tonight tougher than it appears. They are still a banged-up team. They face a difficult travel schedule with a second consecutive venture halfway across the country. Their opponent, Iowa, desperately needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive. But one positive should outweigh all others.

After rocky start, Shock DB one of league’s best

Spokane Shock defensive back Travis Williams didn’t have to read fans’ minds after he struggled early in the 2010 Arena Football League season. Fans freely expressed what they thought of Williams’ performance with verbal taunts from the stands and unsigned screeds posted on message boards.
