Volleyball briefs: Ex-Panther’s Trojans play at WSU, UW

Mead High product Alexis Olgard wanted to get away when she made her decision to attend USC, but she’s looking forward to returning to the Inland Northwest. Olgard, a 6-foot-5 freshman middle blocker who is seeing considerable playing time on USC’s fifth-ranked volleyball team, will be back in her home state this week with matches against No .10 Washington on Friday and Washington State on Saturday.

Whitworth tops Lewis & Clark Pioneers

The Whitworth Pirates got a scare from an improving Lewis & Clark football team. They got a bigger scare when standout running back Adam Anderson limped off the field in the second half, triggering memories of an ankle injury that sidelined him most of the 2009 season. In the end, the Pirates knocked off the Pioneers 38-20 with Anderson sealing the Northwest Conference victory with the last of his three touchdown runs in front of 2,850 fans on a sun-kissed Saturday at the Pine Bowl.

Game caps big weekend at Whitworth

It’s one of the biggest weekends on Whitworth’s sports calendar: The Pirate Night auction was held Friday night, Hall of Fame induction ceremonies are this morning followed by a homecoming football game against Lewis & Clark at 1 at the Pine Bowl. Whitworth (1-2 overall) is trying to rebound from a disappointing 23-7 loss at Redlands last week and start the Northwest Conference season on a winning note against an improved Pioneers squad (1-1). Whitworth has won 11 straight in the series, but L&C trampled Pomona-Pitzer 63-38 last week with a school-record 549 rushing yards. The Pirates’ lone win also came against Pomona-Pitzer, 35-7 two weeks ago.

Then, true to his exhaustive workout and training regimens, Rowley planned on throwing passes to returning receiver Greg Orton.

Whits face Bulldogs again

The Whitworth Pirates and Redlands Bulldogs renew their interesting college football rivalry tonight at Ted Runner Stadium in Redlands, Calif. The teams have met the last six years – Whitworth won the first three, Redlands the last three – and they’ll square off at least the next two seasons. Both teams compete annually for conference titles (Whitworth in the Northwest Conference, Redlands in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). The Bulldogs (1-0) held off Whitworth’s second-half comeback to win 29-24 at the Pine Bowl last season.

Volleyball league matches arriving

Ready or not, conference play is here for a couple of area college volleyball teams and fast approaching for several others. Eastern Washington and Whitworth dive into league play this week, both on the road. The Eagles (1-8) have had a rocky, injury-plagued nonconference season, but hope to find their stride against Big Sky Conference rivals Montana and Montana State this weekend.

Idaho receiver makes Arizona’s roster as free agent

Max Komar figured good news was on the way when the Arizona Cardinals gathered for a team meeting 10 days ago. It was cut-down day across the NFL and Komar noticed team officials earlier pulling selected players from running and weight-lifting drills to inform them they were no longer on the team. At 1 p.m., head coach Ken Whisenhunt entered and told the players that everyone in the meeting room had made the team. Komar, a rookie free agent and former Idaho Vandal, handled it with veteran aplomb. On the inside, however, he was doing back-flips.

Whits face double threat

The opponent changes, but similar challenges await the Whitworth Pirates in Week 2. After losing its season opener to Hardin-Simmons, which featured dual-threat quarterback Justin Feaster and standout receiver ZaVious Robbins, Whitworth calls on Pomona-Pitzer and another talented quarterback-receiver combination today at Merritt Field in Claremont, Calif.

Whitworth starts with tough challenge

This matchup isn’t to be confused with the approach some schools take of easing into the college football season against an overmatched opponent. When the Whitworth Pirates entertain Hardin-Simmons at 1 p.m. today at the Pine Bowl, they will be tangling with the 15th-ranked team in Division III and an opponent that hung a 48-31 loss on the Pirates in Abilene, Texas, to open the 2009 season.

Anderson, veteran defense should help Whitworth prove pollsters wrong

If the Northwest Conference football coaches preseason poll is correct, the Whitworth Pirates will do something this fall that hasn’t happened in the last six seasons: Finish below third place. The coaches picked Whitworth as the fourth-best team in the new-look NWC (associate member Menlo exited and Pacific restarted its program after nearly two decades on the sideline). The last time the Pirates finished out of the top three was in 2003, a fourth-place finish that coincided with the program’s last losing season.

Cancer makes event even more meaningful for Rose

Brigham Young University men’s basketball coach Dave Rose has always given his time generously to support cancer-stricken patients and assist fundraising for cancer research, but it’s taken on new meaning over the last 14 months. In June, 2009, Rose felt light-headed on a flight to Las Vegas. By the time the plane landed, Rose was sprawled over three seats and had to be helped from the cabin by emergency medical staff. He was vomiting blood when he reached the hospital. Doctors removed a softball-sized tumor from his spleen and also removed part of his pancreas and six lymph nodes. Two days after the surgery, he was told he had pancreatic cancer, which usually carries a bleak prognosis.
