Victim Calls In Backup For Deputy Attacker Attempts To Get Lawman’s Gun

A citizen used a patrol car radio early Monday to get help for a Bonner County sheriff's deputy who was being attacked by two men. The 1 a.m. scuffle on Upper Pack River Road nearly turned disastrous when Deputy Eric Skinner said one of the attackers tried to grab his holstered weapon during the fight.

Millionaire Committed After Spree

A Seattle man who recently bought nearly $1 million worth of downtown Sandpoint property - and offered to bail everyone out of the Bonner County Jail - was committed for mental evaluation by authorities this week. Michael J. Lemberg, 51, showed up in Sandpoint several weeks ago. He went on an extravagant spending spree, buying land, cars, a home, art and even hundreds of dollars' worth of pizza for people he didn't know.

Sexual Abuser Of 8-Year-Old Gets 20 Years

A 66-year-old man who posed as a police officer to lure a young boy into his car and molest him was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison. Ronald J. Nordland apologized to the 8-year-old boy he molested last November and to the boy's family, saying he hoped they could get on with their lives.

2 Men Dead In Gunfight At Clagstone

Two men died after a gunfight erupted on a dusty, remote Bonner County road Wednesday afternoon. Several shots - three hitting one man and two tearing into the other - were exchanged between a suspected burglar and a homeowner, said Bonner County Sheriff Chip Ross.

Sandpoint Arts Granted $45,000

The historic Panida Theater, the Festival at Sandpoint and several other arts groups here hauled in more than $45,000 Thursday. At six press conferences across the state, including one in Sandpoint, the Idaho Commission on the Arts handed out $473,956 worth of grants.

Boundary County Schools Prepare A Major Bond Issue

The Boundary County School District is gearing up to ask voters for $15 million to build a new high school and renovate its four elementaries. "We've had facility needs here for a number of years," said Superintendent John Schwartz. "Rather than trying to piecemeal together projects with a bunch of smaller levies, we decided to go with a bond that meets our total needs."

Snow Melt, Rain Causing Lake Level To Rise

Heavy rains and mountain snow melt have sent a rush of water toward Lake Pend Oreille, forcing flood-control spills at Albeni Falls Dam. "I've been here 10 years and haven't seen it like this before," said Dave Harris, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "It's been dry the last few years, and it's unusual to have this much water coming in."
