Board Appoints 7 New Members

Carla K. Johnson

The Spokane School Board appointed seven new members Wednesday to an advisory committee on instructional equity.

The board did not appoint an eighth nominee, Carlos Maldonado, because he lives outside the school district.

It was the first test of a new board policy limiting advisory committee members to district residents.

The board passed the policy in December after Spokane Valley resident Charlie Wolfe was appointed to the district’s sex education advisory committee.

The board appointed these people to the equity committee: Shelly Boyd, Lisa Caldwell, Geoffrey Eng, Cora Glass, Zaretta Hammond, Sherri Louis and John Vinje.

Caldwell will represent Schools are for Everyone, a group advocating inclusion of disabled students in regular classrooms. Louis will represent the Spokane Human Rights Commission.

The others are members at large.

Maldonado was to represent the Inland Hispanic Association. The equity committee now will look for a district resident who can represent that association.
