Gu Debate Team Takes Second Place At Tourney

Compiled By Mary Beth Bonner.

The Gonzaga University debate team of senior Blake Dias and sophomore Ian McLoughlin captured second place at the CrossExamination Debate Association National Championship Tournament March 31-April 3 in San Diego. The team of senior Ben Stuckart and junior Fred Petersen placed third.

Dias was named the best of the tournament’s 432 speakers, the first such award for a Gonzaga debater. Dias captured 177 of 180 points. Gonzaga debate coach Bill DeForeest said it was the first time the university had two teams in the tournament’s “final four.” McLoughlin and sophomore Will Brewer took 17th and 20th place as best speaker, respectively.

The CEDA tournament consists of eight preliminary debates determining the top 64 teams in the nation. Those teams are seeded into a single elimination bracket based on record and total individual speaker ratings over the eight rounds.

GU’s previous high in the sweepstakes had been eighth in 1989, when a GU team included DeForeest. The sweepstakes is a compilation of scores of the university’s best two debate teams for the season, which starts in September. The University of Missouri-Kansas City won the sweepstakes title this year.
