Churches Join To Mark Nazi Liberation

Temple Beth Shalom and a coalition of Christian churches will join Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps.

The temple service for Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Day, also will honor American servicemen and women who helped free the prisoners of those camps.

The ecumenical service, which is open to the public, will feature the temple choir and the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church choir singing hymns in Hebrew.

Rabbi Jacob Izakson will be joined by clergy from Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, Church of Christ and Catholic churches for readings and prayers.

Inland Northwest soldiers who helped liberate concentration camps will be joined by camp survivors and their children for a special candle-lighting ceremony.

The Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust begins at 7 p.m. at the temple, 1322 E. 30th.
