Triplett Falls To Third At Greensboro Open

Kirk Triplett of Pullman, the second-round leader at the Greater Greenboro Open carded a 71 Saturday for a 12-under-par 204 total to fall three shots off the pace.

The third round belonged to Jeff Sluman, who had three birdies over the last four holes as he completed 54 holes at 15-under 201. Peter Jacobsen, who had a 69, was at 203.

The 5-foot-7, 140-pound Sluman is searching for his second victory after winning the PGA Championship in 1988. He entered the $1.5 million GGO riding a frustrating string of 17 straight rounds without a sub-70 score, but has gone 65-66 after opening with a 70.

The weather was expected to change dramatically for today’s final round. The forecast called for rain and a 25-degree drop in the temperature, to the high 50s.

At La Quinta, Calif., Gibby Gilbert and J.C. Snead fired 8-under par 64 to take a 1-stroke lead after two rounds of the $1.1 million PGA Seniors Legends team tournament.

Al Geiberger and Dave Stockton posted a 7-under par 65 to pull into a tie with the team of Lee Trevino and Dave Hill with a two-day total of 130, one shot behind the Gilbert and Snead. Lee and Hill shot a 6-under par 66.

Stockbridge, Ga., Kristi Albers’ second round 3-under-par 69 gave her a 36-hole total of 8-under 136 and a two-shot lead over Vicki Fergon in the rain-plagued LPGA Chick-fil-A Charity Classic. Seventy-two players, including first-round co-leader Laura Davies, didn’t finish their rounds because of a second consecutive day of delays caused by bad weather. The final groups had only completed two holes when darkness forced a postponement.
