10-K Walk Will Raise Funds For Overseas Relief

Ward Sanderson Correspondent

Bloomies who can’t wait until next Sunday to pound some pavement are in luck. Although it’s no race, tomorrow’s CROP Walk ‘95 makes winners out of everyone entering the 10-kilometer event.

It makes winners out of Valley folks in need, too. The Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries and the churches of the greater Spokane area sponsor the local event, along with the Church World Service. While 75 percent of the funds go to overseas relief, the rest is put to work in this area.

Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels gets one-third of the local proceeds. Ruth Fern, the group’s executive director, said funds raised by walkers provided 521 meals for elderly and handicapped Valley residents in need.

“That’s not bad for a one-day event,” Fern said.

Meals on Wheels volunteers work for their groups’ slice of the pledge pie, too. Fern encouraged all of her 150 drivers to lace up and hoof it for hunger.

“A lot of drivers are seniors themselves and want to do the walk,” she said. “I know that many of them have always helped.”

This year, walk organizers hope to raise a total of $15,000. It’s not too late to register - walkers can sign up Sunday in Riverfront Park, just east of the Flour Mill. Entrants don’t need to have sponsors in advance; they can get sponsors afterward or they can even sponsor themselves.

Registration starts at 1 p.m., and the walk follows at 1:30 p.m. The course follows the Centennial Trail from the park to the Spokane Community College campus and back.

Any packaged or canned food donations are welcome, too. Jackie Brislin of the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries said there will be a food drive before the start of the event.

Mormon women’s conference

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding its Spokane East Stake Relief Society women’s conference today. The event, themed “I’ve yet great discoveries to make,” starts at 9:45 a.m. and continues until 1:45 p.m.

The conference happens at the Spokane East Stake Center, 13608 E. 40th.

Beth Ransom, an events organizer, said the conference will focus on women’s motivational and selfesteem issues. Activities include a women’s choir performing original music and a variety of speakers.

A light lunch will also be served.
