Wv Fills Two Administration Jobs

Alison Boggs Staff Writer

With two new hires, West Valley School District has filled vacant administrative positions and fulfilled a large part of its five-year affirmative action goal.

Claudia Leppert, lauded by WV Superintendent Dave Smith as a leader in her field, will become the district’s new director of vocational education.

Paulette Crowley will take over as vice principal at West Valley High School, a position vacated when Mike Van Matre became assistant principal at East Valley High School.

In March, the board decided to hire six minorities and two female administrators within five years.

Leppert now works in the Office of Professional Technical Education at the Oregon Department of Education. She will take charge of the district’s vocational education program on Aug. 23.

“She is a leader in the field of vocational education in the state of Oregon,” Smith said.

A program and curriculum improvement specialist for the state of Oregon since 1989, Leppert serves on three national committees and has given workshops on vocational and technical education all over the country.

Though Leppert said she’ll miss the Education Department, she’s eager to get back to working closely with students. Her goal is to ease the transition from school to work for all students.

“When you’re in administration, you help to write policy and determine best practices, but you don’t have that one-on-one connection with the students,” Leppert said. “I am waiting to get back to what impacts kids on a daily basis.”

Leppert has a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Oregon State College and a master’s degree in teaching from Portland State University. She is married and has five children.

Crowley will assume her duties as assistant principal at WVHS on Aug. 21.

Crowley was principal of Educational Service District 101 STEP/Star Satellite Telecommunications this year and was assistant principal of the program for two years before that.

She has taught at schools and colleges, including Post Falls Junior High School, North Idaho College, Spokane Falls Community College and Moscow High School.

Crowley has a bachelor’s degree in home economics

from the University of Idaho, a master’s degree in textiles from the University of Minnesota and is a doctoral candidate in educational leadership at Gonzaga University. She is married and has three children.
