Heat Takes Toll On Female Cadet

Compiled From Wire Services

The first woman cadet in the 152-year history of The Citadel was unable to take her oath Monday because she was in the infirmary, one of six cadets sickened by the 100-degree heat.

Shannon Faulkner first was treated when she became ill after lunch. Later she returned to the infirmary where she would be held overnight for observation, school spokesman Terry Leedom said.

Six of the 591 cadets were treated for heat-related illnesses, he said.

Faulkner was stricken during the routine of marching, shouting, marching, saluting and more marching that the school calls training by stress.
