Compaq Cuts Prices On Many Computers

From Staff And Wire Reports

Compaq Computer Corp. cut prices on most of its computers as much as 25 percent in anticipation of a Windows95-driven computer-buying binge by consumers and businesses.

By moving early to establish itself as one of the lowest-price sellers of commercial and consumer desktop computers, Compaq hopes to leave competitors at a big disadvantage in catching up in the important fall selling season leading up to Christmas. It’s also preparing to announce a new roster of consumer PCs within the next 30 days.

Houston-based Compaq, the No. 1 personal computer maker, cut prices across the board on its consumer-oriented Presario personal computers. At the same time, it cut prices and increased the standard disk drive size on its commercial desktop PCs.

Compaq also announced nine new models powered by Intel’s 133-megahertz Pentium microprocessor, designed to handle the higher demands of Microsoft’s Windows 95 operating system.
