Trash Cans Removed After Paris Bombing

Steeling the French capital against a “terrorist enterprise,” police sealed or removed hundreds of trash cans Friday in a high-profile security sweep after the city’s second bombing in three weeks.

The government said it was too soon to know whether Thursday’s blast was linked to the July 25 subway bombing that killed seven people and injured 84. This week’s attack, near the Arc de Triomphe, wounded 17 people.

Police blamed the subway bombing on Muslim extremists fighting in Algeria’s 3-1/2-year-old civil war. Islamic radicals are angry at the French government for supporting the military-backed regime in its former colony.

Mayor Jean Tiberi appealed to Parisians to stay calm yet “remain vigilant” to thwart any further terrorism. “No one can say if we are in the middle of a series of attacks,” he said.
