UI Moves Backup Qb Scott To Wide Receiver

Idaho football coach Chris Tormey has made a move at quarterback. Well, more so at wide receiver, but it involved a quarterback.

Redshirt freshman Robert Scott has been switched from quarterback to wide receiver, leaving senior Eric Hisaw and sophomore Brian Brennan to battle for the starting quarterback job.

If it’s any consolation, Scott can rest assured he wasn’t exactly beaten out at quarterback. It’s just that wide receiver has surfaced as a problem position.

“We just needed some help at that position and Robert is one of the best athletes on the team,” Tormey said. “He’s our starter right now (at receiver). We didn’t move him out there to be a backup. He catches the ball real well and he’s done some outstanding things already.”

Prior to Scott’s move, no receivers had distinguished themselves behind returning starter Dwight McKinzie and David Griffin.

Several freshmen appear capable but probably aren’t ready for game duty. Kimiko Bandy is back after missing last year with a knee injury.

“I told them (the coaches) whatever it took for the team to win, I’d be willing to do,” said Scott, who expressed no remorse over the decision. “My main thing is I just want to play.”

Scott worked out at receiver on Sunday and Monday, including some repetitions with the first unit.

“It was a new experience; I haven’t played (wide receiver) before,” Scott said. “There’s a lot more running than at quarterback. I knew all the alignments, but the splits and technique I wasn’t so sure about. Now I see how fast they (quarterbacks) really throw it.”

Scott said he might return to quarterback next spring “if I want to come back” and play that position.
