Cleveland Suffers Rare Loss

American League

Joe Carter scored from first base on third baseman Jim Thome’s throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Toronto Blue Jays past Cleveland 5-4 Tuesday night at Toronto, snapping the Indians’ win streak at four.

Carter, who had homered in the eighth, had a one-out infield single off Julian Tavarez (8-2) in the ninth.

One out later, Tomas Perez hit a ground ball that Thome fielded cleanly, but his throw bounced past first baseman Herbert Perry and into foul territory. Carter scored standing up.

Red Sox 6, Angels 4

Anaheim, Calif.

A beanball duel involving Boston’s Roger Clemens and California was fought with home runs instead of fists, as Jose Canseco followed a brushback pitch with a two-run shot in the Red Sox’s 6-4 victory.

From the second inning on, the battle of division leaders was underscored by a potential powder keg of anger and invective between the Angels’ dugout and Clemens (5-4). It stemmed from knockdown pitches the three-time Cy Young winner traded with California starter Mike Harkey (7-8).

Brewers 8, Royals 1

Milwaukee

Jeff Cirillo hit his third homer in two nights, and Milwaukee used a seven-run fifth inning to rout Kansas City.

Jamie McAndrew (2-2) scattered six hits over eight innings and became the second former replacement pitcher to win for Milwaukee in two nights.

Ventura is 10 for 23 with four homers and 11 RBIs in his last six games. The 15 runs were the most given up by the Tigers this year.

Athletics 6, Yankees 2

Oakland, Calif.
