Karros Delivers L.A. To Victory

Eric Karros’ RBI single in the 11th broke a tie and Roberto Kelly added a two-run single to lead the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-4 victory over the Montreal Expos on Tuesday night.

Chad Fonville started the rally with a two-out single off Willie Fraser (0-1) and advanced on a wild pitch. Mike Piazza, who hit two solo homers earlier in the game, was walked intentionally to bring up Karros.

Karros, who was in a 2-for-22 slump, singled up the middle before Raul Mondesi was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Kelly.

Padres 5, Phillies 3

Philadelphia

Tony Gwynn’s first career grand slam home run sparked San Diego past Philadelphia, ending the Phillies’ five-game winning streak.

The grand slam was San Diego’s eighth of the season, tops in the major leagues. The National League record is nine, held by the 1928 Chicago Cubs, and the major league record is 10 by the 1938 Detroit Tigers and 1987 New York Yankees.

Pittsburgh beat Colorado for its sixth straight victory and its longest winning streak of the season.

Houston

Ryan Klesko hit a three-run double and Chipper Jones had a two-run single, both with two outs in the fifth inning, leading Atlanta past Houston.

St. Louis

Rookie Brian Barber allowed just one run in five innings and Brian Jordan extended his hitting streak to 13 games as St. Louis beat another division leader.

Chicago

Former Lewis-Clark State College star Steve Decker hit a two-run homer and Jeff Conine had a two-run double in a four-run second inning to lead Florida past Chicago.

Giants 5, Mets 1

New York

Robby Thompson and Glenallen Hill homered to support the four-hit pitching of Mark Leiter as San Francisco ended New York’s five-game winning streak.

St. Louis pitcher Danny Jackson, injured in a base-running mishap Aug. 6, will likely miss the remainder of the season with a severely sprained right ankle… .
