Hofstra Defeats Eastern

Area men

Seth Meyers and Rob Ogden each scored 16 points to lead Hofstra to a 78-68 victory over Eastern Washington for third place in the MetLife Classic on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen (2-1) led 40-29 at halftime and extended their lead to 19 with 13:25 left. Jamil Greene had 12 points and Darius Burton added 11 for Hofstra.

A late rally enabled the Eagles (0-4) to close within six points. Adam Dean made six free throws and Curtis Porter porter made a basket and two free throws during a 13-0 EWU run to get Eagles within 65-59 with 4:00 remaining.

However, as has been the case for the young season, EWU then committed its 12th and 13th turnovers of the game to fuel a 5-0 Hofstra run.

On the bright side of the turnover category for the Eagles, their 13 turnovers were eight less than the 21 committed the previous night against San Francisco. And that was a marked improvement from the 31 turnovers made in last Tuesday’s contest against Washington.

Porter led Eastern Washington with 15 points and Dmitri Rideout added 14. Dean scored 12 and Mike Sims had 10 for the Eagles.

In the championship game of the tournament, John Duggan scored 18 points to lead San Francisco to an easy 70-42 victory over Southwest Texas.

Leading 35-30 at the half, the Dons (3-1) held the Bobcats (2-1) scoreless for the first 5:22 of the second half, as they eventually stretched the lead to as many as 30 points.

Southwest Texas scored only 12 points in the second half, the lowest scoring half in the school’s history.

Zerrick Campbell, San Francisco’s leading scorer in the previous tournament game, and their leading rebounder all season, led all first half scorers with 10 points, and finished with 14 points and a game high seven rebounds.

Campbell was named the tournament’s MVP.

San Francisco’s previously injured Gerald Walker, adapting well to his new point guard position, scored 10 points and had eight assists.

Walker and Duggan joined Campbell on the all-tournament team.

Dameon Samsom led Southwest Texas with 10 points.
