Kings’ Smith Avoids Charges

Compiled From Wire Services

Sacramento Kings forward Michael Smith was jailed by police on suspicion of public drunkenness, then released after 6 hours without being cited.

“I feel bad this situation turned into a public matter and I apologize for any inconveniences this incident may have caused,” Smith said in a prepared statement. “Although I have not been charged with the violation of any laws, I would like to apologize to my teammates and the Kings organization for the poor judgment as it relates to my professional responsibilities.”

Sacramento police stopped a car in which Smith was a passenger early Friday morning. Smith was taken into custody downtown at 1:25 a.m. and released from Sacramento County jail at 7:45 a.m.
