Howell Named Planning And Zoning Director

Cheri Howell has been named director of the Kootenai County Planning and Zoning Department.

Howell, 40, has been acting director since September.

Kathy Marcus resigned that month, under pressure from commissioners after only 20 months on the job. Howell has been with the department four years.

Commissioners advertised the position for several months and received dozens of applications, Commissioner Bob Macdonald said. They elected to hire Howell because she showed management skills as interim director.

“We like to hire from within as often as we can,” Macdonald said.

Commissioners pointed out hiring Howell will also keep them from adding additional personnel. The planning department is down from 16 people to 12 since this time last year.

Howell said her goals for the year would be streamlining and improved customer service.

“I’m going to continue to follow the philosophy and direction the board has set,” Howell said.
