At Stuttgart, Germany, Nico Motchebon of Germany broke Sebastian Coe’s 12-year-old European 800-meter indoor record, highlighting an indoor track meet.

Motchebon’s time of 1 minute, 44.88 seconds snapped the mark of Coe, set in 1983, by three-hundredths of a second. Motchebon fell four-hundredths short of the 5-year-old world record of Kenya’s Paul Erang.

American Darnell Hall ran the year’s fastest time in the 400 meters at 45.82 seconds.

At Maebashi, Japan, Linford Christie of Britain, the 1992 Olympic champion at 100 meters, ran 6.6 seconds in a 60-meter indoor race to beat Davidson Ezinwa of Nigeria in a photo finish.
