Colville, Cheney Near State Aa Trips

Joe Everson Correspondent

Frontier League

The Colville boys struggled in the second half but held on to break up a Cheney victory party Saturday night at the Excell Foods Frontier League district basketball tournament at Eastern Washington University.

Cheney (22-0) had trailed most of the way before defeating Pullman 38-34 in the girls’ winners’ bracket contest.

In the boys’ finale, it was a 10-point Colville run in the first half that gave the Indians a big lead en route to a 56-42 victory over the Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks girls and Colville boys (12-10) are one win away from next week’s State AA tournament in the Tacoma Dome. The Cheney boys and Pullman girls are still alive in the losers’ bracket.

On Wednesday night at Reese Court, the Pullman (13-9) and Colville girls will play at 5 p.m. followed by the Blackhawks boys (9-13) and West Valley (18-4). Colville’s girls eliminated WV 65-47 and the Eagles boys ousted Pullman 78-65 Saturday.

heated up in the third period, and when Richard DeMulling hit a baseline jump shot and two free throws, Cheney was within 40-37 early in the fourth.

But the Indians weathered the storm, boosting their lead to seven points when 6-foot-7 Joe Wilson hit back-to-back jumpers in the paint. Colville scored its last eight points from the foul line.

“We knew Cheney would make a run at us,” said Colville coach Bill Pilgeram. “I told the kids at halftime the key to the game would be how we handled it when they did.”

Smith picked up where he left off on Friday with 23 points and 12 rebounds. DeMulling led Cheney with 17 points. Colville 18 12 8 18 - 56 Cheney 12 7 14 9 - 42

The teams combined for seven fourth period turnovers before either of them scored a point, but Cheney’s ballhawking defense held Pullman without a field goal for the last 11 minutes of the game.

Cheney missed its next shot, but saved the rebound and -With the shot clock winding down,
