It Takes Three Ots For Ferris To Escape Young, Gritty Bears

GSL girls

Someday - probably soon - the Central Valley girls are going to win one of these Greater Spokane League basketball games.

Tuesday night at the Coliseum, the young Bears lost to Ferris 72-69, but it took the Saxons three overtimes to get their first win over CV in an estimated nine years.

“If it takes triple overtime to beat CV, we’ll take it,” Ferris coach Janet Wolkey said.

The difference was obvious. The Bears have one senior on the team and precious little experience. The Saxons have four starters back from last year and three - Jayme Morrisette, Emily Ireland and Danielle Tutt - accounted for 20 of 22 points in the three extra 4-minute sessions.

Morrisette and Ireland each hit four free throws in the final 79 seconds while the young Bears, trailing 68-67 at the time, turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation with 24 seconds to play.

“We’ve got to quit being close,” CV coach Dale Poffenroth said. “They fought hard; they’re going to get it. Something’s going to fall for them pretty soon.”

It was the fourth straight game CV (1-4, 2-7) has lost to the teams picked to finish in the top four of the GSL. The Bears led the other three at halftime. This time, they rallied after falling behind the Saxons (2-2, 6-2) 20-9 after the first quarter.

Lisa Lentz, CV’s only senior, drove the lane and hit a short jumper with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 50 and force overtime.

Tutt’s basket in the lane with 2:25 left in the first overtime was the last score, leaving it 54-54.

CV’s Katie Carpenter snagged an air ball under the basket and flipped in a hook shot at the buzzer to cap the second overtime, tied at 62. That was the first CV field goal not scored by Lentz or reserve Jessica Ault since the 5:24 mark of the third quarter.

Two free throws by Ginger Clark gave CV the lead in the third overtime, but Morrisette countered with a basket from the top of the key. Clark quickly responded, but Morrisette came through with a pair of foul shots as Clark fouled out with 1:19 to play. Earlier the Bears lost starters Crystal Lee and Carrie Sanders to fouls.

Angela Kallas made 1 of 2 free throws for CV’s last lead, 67-66 with 1:02 remaining, but Morrisette made two free throws 6 seconds later to put Ferris up for good.

That’s when CV couldn’t get up a shot in 30 seconds, losing the ball. Ireland then made four free throws before Lentz scored a basket with 3 seconds left.

“Jayme stepped up and made some key shots,” Wolkey said. “She looked to score a little bit more tonight. I hope it carries over. We need her.”

The junior point guard scored 20 points, 10 in overtime.

“I knew I had to pick up the slack for Jennifer (Swinton) after she fouled out,” Morrisette said. “Danielle (15 rebounds) can’t do it herself. It wasn’t just me, it was the whole team.”

Including Ireland, who scored 19 points by hitting 12 of 15 free throws, all in the second half. That offset a woeful 3-of-18 night from the field.

“I was very confident because I’ve shot so many (free throws) in practice,” Ireland said. “I don’t loose my confidence. I keep shooting because I know my teammates still have confidence in me. I’m never told not to shoot.”

The Bears, trailing 24-14 in the second quarter, outscored Ferris 10-2 in the final 3 minutes of the half to close within 26-22. They opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run to go up 33-28. Ault scored 4 of 5 CV baskets in the third quarter as the Bears went up 35-34.

“They stepped up their game a level and we didn’t match it,” Morrisette said.

Lentz and Ault combined for 28 points in the second half as both reached career highs. Lentz finished with 16 to lead five Bears in double figures.
