Tuesday Forum To Discuss New Shadle Library Plan

Kara Briggs Staff Writer

The Spokane Public Library will hold a public meeting on Tuesday to gather community reaction to plans to build a library branch in Shadle Park.

The meeting will be at the downtown library, W906 Main. It will begin at 6 p.m.

The library board announced its plan to build the library branch at the northwest corner of Shadle Park, immediately south of Wellesley Avenue and east of Belt Street. The site is presently a parking lot.

A new 73-stall parking lot would be built next to the library.

The plan would allow the existing Shadle Library, which has been in a Shadle Center storefront for 20 years, to have its own freestanding building and more space.

“The plan, as proposed, will result in minimal loss of green space,” Spokane Public Library Director Dan Walters said. “Reconfiguration of the parking area will maximize parking opportunities.”

The library board has had difficulty finding vacant land in the highly developed Shadle Park neighborhood.
