Boeing Reports Strong Growth In Air Cargo Shipments To Asia

Associated Press

Increasing air cargo shipments around the Pacific Ocean and Asia are a strong sign of recovery in the world economy, a Boeing Co. official said.

Cargo shipments on Asian routes grew more than anywhere else in the world said James Edgar, regional cargo marketing director of Boeing Commercial Air Group.

By 2000 Asia is likely to be producing 35 percent of all manufactured goods, Edgar predicted at an Asian-Pacific air transport conference in Singapore.

“In addition, disposable income is going up, so the people of Asia are becoming major consumers and the Asian countries their own best customers,” he said.

Air cargo, usually an indicator of broader economic trends, produced slightly higher yields in 1994 after a long downward drift.

In traffic, air cargo increased 13.9 percent between Asia and North America.
