Petition Effort For New City Set For Startup After Meetings

A group leading an effort to form the city of Opportunity in the Spokane Valley will kick off its petition drive with two meetings July 22.

The events will be held at the Opportunity Township Hall building at 12112 E. Sprague and at Valley Mission Park.

Both meetings will run from noon to 4 p.m.

Opportunity incorporation leaders will collect signatures and answer questions about their campaign.

The group must collect signatures from nearly 1,600 registered voters within the proposed city’s boundaries for the proposal to qualify for a special election.

They have until late December to gather the names.

The city of Opportunity would be bounded by Argonne and Woodruff roads on the west, Evergreen Road on the East, Interstate 90 on the north and 16th Avenue on the south.

Nearly 16,000 people would live there.

Opportunity is one of five cities being proposed in the Valley. The others are Park Place, Hillcrest Park, Evergreen and Dishman.

Leaders of the other four incorporation efforts are seeking signatures as well.

Combined, the five cities cover much the same territory as three single cities proposed in the Valley since 1990.

Voters rejected all three of those efforts, the last time this past May.
