Reds, Larkin Add To Chicago’s Wrigley Woes

Barry Larkin homered, tripled, drove in three runs and scored three times Thursday as the Cincinnati Reds opened the second half of their season with an 11-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Jose Rijo (5-4) allowed five hits in five innings and capped a five-run first inning with a two-run single.

The Cubs, 24-15 on the road, are 13-19 at Wrigley Field after going 20-39 at home last season. No Chicago player has had it rougher at Wrigley than Steve Trachsel (3-7), whose career home record fell to 1-12. He is 11-4 on the road in his two-plus seasons.

Marlins 4, Dodgers 0

Los Angeles

Chris Hammond pitched a three-hitter and Greg Colbrunn hit a three-run homer as Florida handed Los Angeles its 10th shutout loss this season. Hammond struck out four and walked one.

Phillies 4, Expos 3

Montreal

Curt Schilling fanned 10 and Philadelphia held off a late Montreal charge to snap a four-game losing streak. Schilling (6-5) walked one and allowed four singles in seven innings, including an RBI single to Mike Lansing in the second. That made the score 3-1, and Schilling retired the next 15 batters.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 6

Pittsburgh

Orlando Merced, running on the pitch, scored the go-ahead run from first base on Don Slaught’s eighth-inning single as Pittsburgh beat St. Louis.

The Pirates failed to hold 4-0 and 6-4 leads, but still withstood Ray Lankford’s four RBIs to match a season-high fourgame winning streak.

Mets 4, Rockies 2

New York

Bobby Jones and John Franco combined on a four-hitter as New York held off Colorado to snap the Rockies’ five-game winning streak.

Giants 6, Astros 5, (12)

San Francisco

San Francisco scored three unearned runs in the ninth to tie the game, then beat Houston in the 12th on an RBI single by Barry Bonds.

Braves 4, Padres 1

San Diego

Greg Maddux pitched a five-hitter for his seventh straight win and Fred McGriff drove in all four runs with a single and home run as Atlanta defeated San Diego.
