Festival Winds Down

Dave Johnson finished third in the javelin during the final day of the U.S. Olympic Festival with a throw of 245 feet, 10 inches - the best toss of his career a week before he competes in the World Championships in Goteborg, Sweden.

While Johnson came away with a medal, another of the festival’s big names struggled. World record-holder Kevin Young finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles, and ran a leg on the last-place 1,600 relay team.

Ed Kaminski of Merriam, Kan., won the javelin with a 260-foot throw that is the second-best in the United States this year.

Heather Brink stood on the brink of U.S. Olympic Festival history, but missteps in the final two routines in Boulder, Colo., cost her a shot at a women’s gymnastics record.

Brink, who finished with four medals, missed her chance at winning a record six when she fell off the balance beam, then made a mistake during the floor exercises.
