Man Shoots, Kills Children, Wounds Others

Associated Press

A man opened fire at an apartment complex Sunday with two handguns and a rifle, killing two children and critically wounding their baby sister and mother.

The gunman also wounded a police officer, a security guard and another man during the morning rampage, police said.

The motive was not immediately clear. Witnesses told police that it may have been related to a domestic dispute.

John Wheat, 51, was arrested at the scene without a struggle. He was charged with two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder, police said. His relationship to the victims was not known.

The children who were killed, ages 8 and 6, had been shot in the head, police said. The 20-month-old girl and the children’s 28-year-old mother were in critical condition.
