Diplomat Dies In Canal After Heart Attack

Compiled From Wire Services

A man whose body was found in the C&O Canal was identified Monday as Townsend B. Friedman Jr., a career U.S. diplomat and former ambassador to Mozambique.

U.S. Park Police said Friedman, 55, of Potomac, Md., apparently suffered a heart attack, fell off his bicycle into the canal and drowned. The body was found by a jogger about 6 p.m. Saturday.

Friedman joined the State Department’s Foreign Service in 1962 and served in several diplomatic posts in South America. In 1990, President Bush named him ambassador to Mozambique.
