Eavesdropping Leads To Official’s Departure

Spain’s top intelligence official resigned following revelations that his agency eavesdropped on telephone conversations of dozens of public and political figures, including King Juan Carlos, the government said Thursday.

Deputy Prime Minister Narcis Serra told reporters that Emilio Manglano’s resignation as head of the CESID intelligence service was accepted Thursday by Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez.

Manglano, 69, has headed CESID, the country’s main intelligence service, since 1981.
