Heather Graff of the University of Arizona shot a par-73 to take the firstround lead of stroke-play qualifying at the 1995 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in Colts Neck, N.J.

Graff, a college sophomore from Kennewick, is in front by a stroke at Hominy Hills Golf Course.

Britney Holt of Spokane shot an 84 and her mother, Marcy, an 86.

Play continues Thursday with a second round of stroke play before the field of 132 is trimmed to 32 players, who advance to match play. The 18-hole championship final is Sunday.

A 26-year-old Massachusetts man was arrested at the Greater Hartford Open in Cromwell, Conn., after he went under the ropes on the 18th green to try to get an autograph from Greg Norman.

Peter Kalamvokis of Newton, Mass., did not get close to Norman, who was playing in a pre-tournament Pro-Am, said police Capt. Thomas Roohr. Norman had trouble with fans last year during the GHO.
