Triple Olympic gold medalist Steve Redgrave took the first strokes to a record triumph in the 16th and last Henley Regatta of his career.

The Briton, who has won Olympic gold medals in pairs at Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona and believes he can do the same in Atlanta next year, and fellow Olympic champion Matthew Pinsent began their bid to win the Silver Goblets and Nickalls Cup by beating teenagers Robert Sanders and Richard McElroy by 3 3/4 lengths.

The Thames Cup saw the most exciting race of the regatta when the University of Washington junior crew beat the defending champions from Brown University after several lead changes.
