Conference Helps Women Expand Horizons

It probably isn’t news to young women that they don’t have to be a secretary or waitress if they don’t want to. There’s a world of possibilities out there for people with ambition.

But that may not be a message junior high and high school girls hear often enough, so several Spokane and national organizations and schools have teamed up to sponsor the Expanding Your Horizons Math and Science Careers Conference on March 25.

Local women from business, engineering, military aviation, medicine, science, education and other occupations will share their experience and students will learn what classes and schools would help them achieve their goals.

Parents and teachers can go too; they’ll learn about financial aid, career bias and will hear from a panel of professionals.

The conference costs $10, which includes a T-shirt and lunch. Check with your school’s career center or math teachers. Or, call 245-3518 for a registration form. The last day to mail in forms is March 6.

Don’t forget: Sylvan Learning and Technology Center is still taking reservations for its free workshop that could help you get a good score on the SAT.

The first workshop is Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the downtown branch of the Spokane Library, Room 1A. Seating is limited to 60, so call first.

Or, you can mark your calendar for the April 27 workshop, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hawthorne Library (E44 Hawthorne Rd.). The sessions are open to all parents and students planning to take the SAT. Call 467-8715 to sign up.
