A girls

Four seasons ago, the Lakeside High School girls basketball team was winless in the Northwest Class A League.

This season it is the seventh-place team in the state.

Despite losing to Foster dogs 56-48 Saturday in the fourth- or- seventh place game at the Class A girls baketball tournament in the Tacoma Dome, the Eagles took another positive step in building a strong girls basketball tradition in Nine Mile Falls.

“We’re just taking one step at a time,” said Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz. “Each year we’re getting a little bit better. We’ll be back next year.”

Lakeside (23-5) played strong defense and forced Foster (25-2) to turn the ball over 24 times in the first three quarters. Foster protected the ball better in the final quarter to hold on for its fourth consecutive state medal.

The Eagles were 21 of 60 (35 percent) from the field, 2 of 7 in the final 4 minutes.

Foster led by as much as 10 in the third quarter but Lakeside cut the margin to 51-48 when Brianne Jolley hit a short jumper with less than two minutes left.

Lakeside, however, couldn’t score again. Foster finished on a 5-0 run.
