Fire Damages Art Center

Fire filled a Spokane landmark with smoke early Thursday, but did little structural damage.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the electrical fire in the second-floor ceiling in the Corbin Art Center.

No artwork was damaged, said center Director Lynn Mandyke, who discovered the fire about 2:30 a.m. after a security company called her home to report a burglar alarm sounding at the center. The alarm apparently was triggered by the fire.

Mandyke removed a display of paintings from the building. The watercolors, by Spokane artist Stan Miller, will be back on display Saturday, she said.

Classes will not be disrupted, Mandyke said. About 460 people are registered for winter quarter classes at the center, 507 W. Seventh.

The center, in Pioneer Park, was built in 1898 by Kirtland Cutter for Daniel Corbin, who earned a fortune building railroads and in other ventures.
